CHEMEX BREW GUIDE
Below is a 6 step guide to brewing the perfect cup of coffee with a Chemex.
1. MEASURE BEANS
Start by measuring your coffee beans. For a standard 8-ounce cup of coffee, use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee beans.
2. GRIND SIZE
For Chemex brewing, use a medium-coarse grind size. Aim for a texture similar to sea salt or coarse sand to ensure proper extraction without clogging the filter.
3. WATER-TO-GROUND RATIO
The recommended water-to-coffee ratio for Chemex brewing is typically 1:15 or 1:17. This means for every 1 gram of coffee grounds, use 15-17 grams of water. Adjust according to your taste preferences.
4. PREHEAT CHEMEX
Preheat your Chemex by rinsing it with hot water and then discard the rinse water. This helps maintain the brewing temperature and ensures an even extraction.
5. BREW
Place the Chemex filter in the brewer and add the coarsely ground coffee beans. Pour hot water (just off the boil) over the grounds, saturating them evenly to start the brewing process. Allow the coffee to bloom for about 30 seconds, then continue pouring water in a slow, circular motion until you reach the desired amount.
6. SERVE
Once all the water has passed through the grounds and into the Chemex, remove the filter and discard it. Pour the brewed coffee into your favorite mug or carafe and enjoy its smooth, clean flavor profile.
